Community Programs

ARTreach in the Community
ARTreach recognizes the essential role the arts play in enhancing the lives of people in the community, and the effect arts education has on developing young people and the enriching the lives ofthe elderly. We believe that communities should have access to an array of performing and visual arts education and events that contribute to improving the quality of life for its residents.

Further, a thriving community ensures that children have access to the arts, which in turn contributes to their overall development.
It is our mission to provide equal access to the arts while inspiring, empowering and uniting individuals and their communities to succeed through cultural awareness and the arts.

We work towards achieving our mission by focusing on three areas of strategic action:

  • Bring high quality art-related programs and services to the underprivileged and the underserved populations in the tri-county area of Katy, Texas, Harris County, Houston, Fort Bend County, Richmond and Sugar Land and Waller County, Pattison and Brookshire area targeting: children at risk; troubled youth; children and adults with special needs; and the elderly.
  • Provide an array of performing and visual arts events that contribute to improving the quality of life for target audiences in the tri-county area of Katy area residents.
  • Advocate for State of Texas policy developments that increase the visibility and stability of the arts and arts education in Texas thereby enhancing the education curriculum and overall quality of life.

ARTreach Community Programs
Note: ARTreach Community Events underpin the goals and mission of the Texas Commission on the Arts: to develop a receptive climate for the arts through conservation and advancement of our rich and diverse arts and cultural industries; to foster a public agenda through the stimulation of our local economy, education of our citizens, promotion of cultural tourism and by ensuring all citizens in our area have access to arts experiences that enhance quality of life.

ARTreach Expressive Arts Workshops and Retreats
ARTreach Expressive Arts Workshops are professionally facilitated by artist and author Lorena Fernandez, MA.

What is Expressive Arts?
Expressive Arts is a relatively new practice in the mental health field. It uses the arts to help heal the mind, body, emotions and spirit. It also incorporates movement, writing, and the visual arts, such as painting, drawing, sculpture and collage, as well as sounds, drama and meditation.

Who can benefit from the Expressive Arts?
Every person can use Expressive Arts for self-discovery, healing and conflict resolution. Expressive Art programs can benefit the elderly, youth in recovery, the homeless, refugees, veterans, and individuals living with cancer and other health issues.  Corporations can utilize the expressive arts for team building, brainstorming, problem solving, and more, in a wide range of business, professional and educational settings.

To be able to express yourself is a primary need of every human being, but it is also a challenging skill that determines the nature of the interactions an individual experiences in his or her society.  Expressive Arts workshops teach that art is a powerful, constructive and healthy form of self-expression. Participants learn that through art, they can express their feelings, as well as describe experiences and situations that might not be easily verbalized.

ARTreach introduces Expressive Arts, as a tool for self discovery for youth and adults undergoing treatment for depression, anger management, addiction recovery, the elderly in assisted living, and special needs individuals, including children suffering from neurological differences.

The ability to express oneself through art is a source of hope in difficult times. It is true that making art about an experience from ordinary life can make that experience extraordinary.  In practice, Lorena Fernandez uses a combination of studio experience, sound, and movement to guide the participants into deeper layers of themselves and their emotions. There is open dialog during class and a gentle, safe atmosphere.  There is an emphasis on a non-judgmental, non-competitive and safe environment. In this environment, individual’s dreams, aspirations, revelations and insights are given proper respect by all workshop participants.

Expressive Art Workshops and Retreats can be booked at your facility, hill county retreat, or at our community venue partner locations. Please inquire info@artreachonline.org

While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many.
